Can Africa hold sway with local battery value chains?

As the global demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) ramps up, should Africa develop local battery value chains? As countless energy experts have professed, the world’s pursuit of an energy transition is only possible with the prioritisation of battery energy storage. Africa abounds with battery metal resourcesIn Southern Africa alone, the region’s demand for battery energy storage might reach 10,400MWh by 2030, according to the World Bank. Nchocho said Africa could pursue large-scale industrialisation by developing local mineral supply chains and prioritising value addition. In the past, an oversupply of lithium resources has led to a drop in lithium price, impacting parts of the lithium value chain.
