A leading economist has aptly invoked a famous Monty Python sketch to describe the mixed signals the Canadian economy is giving. “Is the Canadian economy a dead parrot, like the one in the Monty Python skit?” Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, wrote in an investors note. Farm Boy commands unusually high loyalty with its customers, and its extensive line of private label goods is a unique draw. Farm Boy, which has just 28 stores, mostly in Eastern Ontario, is an unfamiliar brand in the GTA. There’s also a risk of Farm Boy “cannibalizing” sales from Empire’s full-service Sobeys and budget PriceCo stores.
