Canada's Competition Bureau to probe grocery sector amid rising food prices

The federal competition watchdog is launching a study of Canada’s grocery industry amid rising public concerns that the supermarket giants took advantage of the inflation crisis. In an announcement Monday, the Competition Bureau said it wants to know “why prices are so high right now” and whether a lack of competition in the sector is partly to blame. “Grocery prices are increasing quickly, so we are going to study how governments can take action to improve competition in the sector. More competition means lower prices, more choices, and better convenience for consumers,” the bureau said. “We will focus on competition in the grocery sector and why prices are so high right now,” the bureau said.
