By now, everyone has heard of the island PR nightmare that was Fyre Festival, and the lawsuits against the “luxury” music concert’s organizers continue to roll in. If there’s one thing Fyre Festival succeeded in, albeit inadvertently, it was helping to bring the legal issues associated with celebrity endorsements on social media to light in the public eye. The second class-action complaint filed against the festival accused 100 now unnamed “Jane Does” of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair trade practices. And this isn’t the first time Instagram influencers have found themselves on the FTC’s radar. Under FTC policy, each violation of this nature can result in a civil penalty of up to $16,000.
