A search and rescue team discovered Bakar Sampelit at 10.52am in a creek about 500 metres from his home. Kota Marudu district police chief Superintendent Simiun Lomudin said the victim's family reported him missing after realising he was not at home at 4.11pm on Jan 3. He said the family initially conducted their own search around the village but were unable to find him.
