Chicago’s New Celebrity: “Chonk” The Turtle

Residents of Chicago have found a new favorite in Chonk, a large snapping turtle that has been spotted lounging in the Chicago River. Despite Chonk becoming a popular symbol of the rejuvenation of the Chicago River, officials still urge people to avoid swimming and other activities in the water since it is unsafe due to the presence of fecal coliform bacteria. Over the years, the 156-mile Chicago River became a dumping ground for industrial waste and pollution led to decreased levels of biodiversity. Friends of the Chicago River is working to disinfect the river and reduce the amount of bacteria discharged into it from sewage treatment. Chonk’s sightings, along with other animals like river otters and more fish species, are a sign that the Chicago River may be becoming less polluted.
