Child abuse can leave molecular scars found years later, study says


VANCOUVER—Childhood abuse can not only leave a lasting imprint on your memory but your cells as well, according to a new study from the University of British Columbia and Harvard University. But until researchers can conduct larger studies, they don’t know how this “tagging” — known as DNA methylation — affects victims’ health. That’s why they looked for DNA methylation in sperm cells. Chan School of Public Health, in which some acknowledged they had been victims of childhood abuse. “So it’s conceivable that the correlations we found between methylation and child abuse might provide a percentage probability that abuse had occurred.” Melanie Green is a Vancouver-based reporter covering food culture and policy.
