Nothing exemplifies such inclinations as much as China’s efforts to bully the US’ National Basketball Association (NBA). The lesson should be clear: Bullying is a surefire way to lose friends and make enemies in the West. During the 1971 World Table Tennis Championships in Japan, US player Glenn Cowan boarded a shuttle bus with the Chinese national team. Rather than avoid him, as the Chinese team had been instructed to do, its top player, Zhuang Zedong (莊則棟), initiated a conversation with the American (through an interpreter). Recognizing the diplomatic opportunity, Mao Zedong (毛澤東) invited the US team to an all-expenses-paid visit to China.
