Why, yes, that IS a record single-day gross for any movie in China, eclipsing the $69 million opening day for Fate of the Furious. Almost as impressive is the fact that Monster Hunt 2 opened with $97 million on the same day that Wanda Pictures’ action comedy sequel Detective Chinatown 2 opened with a near-record $59.3m in a single day. And no, there has never been a single day where two North American releases made over $50m domestic in the same day, because I too was curious about that. In what must be the 4,591st variation on The Monkey King (not a criticism, merely an observation), Cheang Pou-soi’s Monkey King 3 earned a terrific $28 million opening day as well. That’s not far off from Monkey King 2’s $41m opening weekend back in March of 2016, so that film’s $185m total is still well within reach.
