Late in 2017, I was offered a free car. I hadn’t owned a car since I was 26. Didn’t get a free car for 20 years. If the power steering fluid started slowly leaking out — purely hypothetically — I wouldn’t just buy a case of power steering fluid and top it up as necessary for months until the steering rack basically collapsed. I was out nearly $1,000, and objectively didn’t even need a car, yet felt an odd pride in this transaction.
