Christie Blatchford: Bureaucrat says gas plant warning to McGuinty staffer wasn’t about ‘Cover Your Ass’

TORONTO — Shortly before Peter Wallace’s two and a half days in the witness stand at the Ontario gas plants trial ended Wednesday, defence lawyer Scott Hutchison asked him a question about acronyms. This being a trial about government, specifically the former Dalton McGuinty one, the case is filled with them. The former secretary to McGuinty’s cabinet took a drink of water and allowed himself the smallest of smiles. Opposition parties were baying for documents and blood; a legislative committee had demanded unprecedented disclosure of records; gas plants was all anyone at Queen’s Park was thinking about. He okayed it, but made sure Livingston also got the memo strongly recommending that any gas plant records be preserved.
