Christmas Box Office: 'Mary Poppins' And 'Bumblebee' Can't Compete With 'Aquaman'

In holdover news, Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns earned $11.6 million to bring its seven-day total to $50.3m. The Transformers prequel earned $8.8m yesterday for a $34.1m five-day cume, a promising 137% jump from Christmas Eve. It’s not an exact comparison since Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened on a Wednesday and had Christmas Day fall on a Monday, but that super-leggy kid-friendly fantasy jumped 111% on Christmas Day. That’s an aspirational comparison, but it’s clearly what Paramount was looking for when it moved Bumblebee from summer to Christmas. If it doesn’t stick around then it’ll be clear that A) there may not be enough room for three huge kid-friendly fantasies over Christmas and B) something should have moved to Christmas Day.
