City gives tent city dwellers 2 weeks to pack up and leave

Brad Ross, the city's chief communications officer, says those living in makeshift encampments like the ones beneath the Gardiner Expressway have been given 14 days to pack up their belongings and leave. (Richard Agecoutay/CBC)While in some cases the encampment violates city bylaws, Ross said staff are not using the threat of a fine. The city is concerned that some tent city dwellers may be using unsafe sources of heat, such as propane tanks. Street nurse Cathy Crowe says evicting inhabitants of the makeshift encampments is callous and the city is not doing a good job of providing adequate shelter for the homeless, especially during winter. (Laura DaSilva/CBC)"We're calling for the opening of other facilities, such as federal buildings like the armoury or city buildings, such as Metro Hall.
