Climate change poses a challenge to energy systems in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). As such, climate resilience is key to energy transitions in the MENA region. According to a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) commentary by policy analysts and a MENA programme officer, the region’s energy systems will have to build in more climate resilience to cope with expected increases in climate impacts. Climate resilience to be incorporated into energy system planningThe currently rising temperatures and extreme heat events raise additional concerns for energy system resilience in the region. Therefore, the IEA specialists have noted three important overlapping goals for which a climate-resilient energy transition presents solutions: Clean energy, energy security and climate change adaptation.
