The "democracy summit" due to be hosted by US President Joe Biden next week is reminiscent of cold war mentality. Given that Taiwan is unable to join the United Nations, Biden is creating a broad platform to include it in the international community. Instead, Tsai has asked digital minister Audrey Tang and Taiwan's top representative in Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, to represent Taiwan at the summit. Perhaps there is a trade-off between the US and Taiwan, fearing the summit would go too far to anger Beijing. The list includes not only names but also a cold war styled diplomatic manoeuvre aimed primarily at China.
