Even a 1-degree difference in a forecast’s accuracy can be the difference between life and death, our research shows. The fact is, people do pay attention to weather forecasts and adjust their activities in response to them. So, what is the value of accurate weather forecasts? The result shows that 50% more accurate forecasts are worth at least $2.1 billion per year based on the mortality benefits alone. In comparison, the 2022 budget of the National Weather Service was less than $1.3 billion.
