Britain’s departure from the EU poses huge economic challenges for this country, but what is often underappreciated is the hidden costs. The Times has reported that Brexit could add tens of millions to Ireland’s annual legal costs and limit the government’s ability to protect the country’s interests in EU legislation talks. Since both countries joined the bloc in 1973 Ireland has relied heavily on British civil servants to transpose Brussels directives into common law. It has also leant on the UK to influence early negotiations on proposed legislation. Concerns have grown over the hidden financial impact of Brexit as Ireland is forced to take a more active oversight role.
