A Philadelphia community is demanding answers after an Ethiopian graduate student was shot in the chest by a police officer. “He told me it was probably the most excruciating pain he had ever experienced,” Simon Haileab, Belay’s attorney, told ESSENCE. “I still don’t know how he’s still alive.” According to Haileab, Belay was struck six times. “He was an introvert; someone you’d never think to raise his voice.”As Belay slowly recovers, so does the Ethiopian community. “The level of abuse directed at Black youth is a challenge for all of us, but within the Ethiopian community, there’s little struggle and difficulties,” Straughter told ESSENCE.
