Conservationists seek closure of Kanchanaburi quarryKhao Raet in Muang district of Kanchanaburi is a mountain where conservationists in the province want to protect from a firm having a concession to run a quarry. A 25-year concession -- running from June 1, 1995 to May 31, 2020 -- to operate a quarry on Khao Raet mountain overlooking Kanchanaburi town was granted to Silakhaonoi Limited Partnership. Surapong Kongchanthuek, adviser to the Kanchanaburi Conservationist Group, said the quarry has long caused vibrations and dust, particulary the toxic PM2.5. Khao Raet itself has many tourist spots such as Man Wichit, Sua and Mangkorn Thong caves, he said. The government officials concerned should not extend the concession rights for the firm and quickly restore Khao Raet to its former condition.
