Work has begin on a new garment park in the Ethiopian city of Hawassa, located 140 miles south of the capital Addis Ababa – already the location of the country's flagship Hawassa Industrial Park. The Hawassa Textile and Industrial Park SC company is building on the site of the former state-owned Hawassa Textile Factory, which was privatised three years ago, and has hired China's Sinoma Engineering to carry out construction. Ahmed said the Hawassa Industrial Park will have 14 sheds, each covering 11,000 square metres, and will provide additional space for garment companies already operating out of the Hawassa industrial Park who are looking to expand. The fact that we are building the new industrial park very near to the Hawassa Industrial Park and there is 120,000 trained youth in the town it would be convenient for them to lease shades from us," he said. The industrial park is expected to create jobs for 35,000 people when it fully goes operational, with 90% of products manufactured for export.
