The high street appeared to have shrugged off Brexit fears after retail sales grew by more than 1 per cent last month as shoppers showed no sign of cutting their spending. The latest figures from the British Retail Consortium, which showed the strongest growth since January, are likely to be regarded as an indication that little has changed since the referendum decision. Total sales were up just under 2 per cent in July, while on a like-for-like basis they rose by 1.1 per cent, helped by promotions, in spite of the uncertainty caused by the vote to leave the EU.
