London’s controversial garden bridge will cost taxpayers £50m – enough to construct almost three millennium bridges across the Thames – if it is not built. The total cost of the millennium bridge near St Paul’s cathedral was £18.2m, £2m over budget. “However, this project is fatally flawed and has proved incapable of delivery – but not before Boris has effectively thrown away £50m of public funding. The garden bridge is very quickly becoming radioactive.”The Garden Bridge Trust said that “nearly all pre-commencement planning conditions” had been satisfied, along with pre-construction work and advanced negotiations on land deals. Many projects start construction without all funds raised, such as the Tate Modern and the Olympic park.
