Up to 60,000 hospitality workers could soon be out of work as industry bosses look at novel ways to stay afloat in the wake of coronavirus. President of Hospitality New Zealand and Wellington bar owner Jeremy Smith said up to 35 per cent of hospitality businesses would likely close within six months. That would mean 50,000 to 60,000 people out of work across all hospitality including bars, restaurants, and accommodation nationwide. Even if the level four lockdown ends next week, the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday there will be no sharp return to normal freedoms. New Zealand will likely spend time in level three, where the restrictions will mean many on-premise hospitality businesses will not be able to re-open.
