The group that owns the franchise operator of Burger King restaurants has been placed in receivership by its financiers. Burger King first opened in New Zealand in 1993, and has 83 restaurants with over 2600 staff. Antares Restaurant Group Ltd, the New Zealand operator of Burger King, has received $11.5 million in wage subsidies for 1918 staff. The aim was to keep open a "critical mass" of restaurants, and Burger King Asia Pacific was keen to keep the Burger King brand operating in New Zealand, under new ownership.
