Despite making clear they would be unable to keep up the £1,400 monthly rent, the couple claim the council forced them to take it, landing them immediately in arrears. When they turned back to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council for help, they say they were told that they had made themselves "intentionally homeless" by leaving the property voluntarily. The community raised more than £2000, which meant they could spend Christmas with their youngest son and were able to put their car in for an MOT. “We are also trying to provide them with further help through our partners who specialise in supporting homeless families, though we understand they have declined this offer.
