Court Halts Trump Administration’s Move to End Ethiopian Protections

A federal judge on Wednesday blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to end legal protections for more than 5,000 Ethiopians living and working in the United States, Reuters reported. He noted that ongoing armed conflict and natural disasters in the country continue to make conditions unsafe for returnees. Three Ethiopian nationals and the advocacy group African Communities Together challenged the termination, arguing that DHS had ignored the persistent dangers in multiple regions of Ethiopia. A DHS spokesperson described the ruling as the latest example of judicial interference preventing the Trump administration from enforcing what it called integrity in America’s legal immigration system, Reuters reported. Murphy had issued a temporary order on January 30 to prevent the scheduled February 13 termination of TPS, allowing time for the case to be reviewed.
