Ethical veganism is a belief protected under equality laws, an employment tribunal ruled today in a case involving an activist who once boycotted Costa Coffee for using monkeys as baristas in a TV advert. Robin Postle ruled in favour of Jordi Casamitjana, 55, who claims that he was dismissed from his job for his vegan beliefs and wanted the same protection as followers of a religion. The decision means that it is unlawful to discriminate against vegans. The case could lead to new rights for vegans, make it unlawful for bosses to expect staff to wear uniforms made from animal products, banks to refuse loans to vegans or food establishments to mock their dietary restrictions.
