Covid-19 in prisons : Overcrowding threatens fast spread


By Maheesha MudugamuwaThe country’s highly congested prisons are facing a serious threat of Covid-19 as the number of total cases increased to over 400 yesterday (15) with the record of a total of 108 new cases from five prisons including the Welikada, Bogambara, Bossa, Mahara, and Kuruvita prisons. According to Bogambara Prison Acting Prisons Superintendent S. Prabhahara, a total of 508 prisoners were located at the Bogambara Prison at present and among them, a total of 204 prisoners have been subjected to PCR testing. Accordingly, the patients were reported from the Welikada, Bogambara, Boossa, Mahara, and Kuruvita prisons. Commenting on the infected prison inmates, the Commissioner General noted that so far, two hospitals have been allocated for Covid-19 treatments. “The treatment of male prisoners is being conducted at the Welikada Prison Hospital while female prisoners are being treated at the Negombo Prison Hospital,” he said.
