The development of several Covid-19 vaccines in less than a year has given us all hope of a release from the pandemic. There is a small risk that some fully vaccinated people will get infected. These infections occur not only in the unvaccinated; there are cases of breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated people. Another reason for breakthrough infections is due to viral variants that escape immune detection and flourish even in vaccinated people. Further study into the causes of breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections could help scientists to refine Covid vaccines or the schedule of booster doses.
