The man killed in a crash while competing in the South Island Gliding Championships was a Melbourne grandfather of seven. The Australian Associated Press reported the Gliding Federation of Australia confirmed Mr Wilson's death and said he was a ''respected member and very experienced''. Mr Wilson was reportedly dead when emergency services arrived at the crash scene. While some carry more than one person, Mr Wilson was the only person involved in the crash on Tuesday. New Zealand Police have yet to officially name Mr Wilson as the crash pilot.
