Cross-strait harmony good for tourism: TIERTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Responding to the mass demonstration staged by the tourism industry yesterday, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台經院) said the industry's survival hinged on a steady flow of Chinese travelers to the island. China is the largest source of global tourists to Taiwan, and cross-strait relations play a critical role in determining the number of Chinese tourists, TIER Chairman Chiang Pin-kung (江丙坤) said in an interview. Chiang cited the recent improvement in China-Japan relations as an example, saying that it has helped bring more Chinese tourists to Japan. On the topic of Monday's tourism industry protest, Chiang said people had the right to rally and express their frustrations.
