Cub Swanson entered his UFC Fight Night 123 bout against Brian Ortega knowing he had much more than a win or loss on the line. Instead, Swanson hoped a win over the rising Ortega would put him in a better spot to negotiate a new deal. Ortega ended Swanson’s night at the 3:22 mark of the second round via a guillotine choke submission. Ortega and Swanson won the “Fight of the Night” bonus for their main event contest on the Fresno card. Despite the way the fight ended, Swanson felt it was one of the best performances of his career.
