Unfortunately, as cybersecurity has become a hot public-facing field, companies are increasingly harnessing this genuine fear to commercialize and sell fear itself. Most recently, an experience with SiteLock and Domain.com this past week offers a lesson about the state of consumer-facing website security. Additionally, Domain.com lists SiteLock as one of the products it offers, while SiteLock lists Domain.com as a hosting partner. More to the point, the mere presence of a malware alert email would tell the bad actor that their malware has been discovered. The Domain.com spokesperson confirmed that Domain.com provides a free SiteLock malware scan to all of its customers that do not subscribe to SiteLock.
