Déby’s death has radiated fears of instability across much of North Africa and the Sahel, and sparked a host of conspiracy theories. The last major Chadian rebel assault on Deby’s forces, in 2019, triggered French airstrikes to save the Chadian leader. FACT had equal opportunity to benefit from training by Islamist-Misrata militias, which are opposed to Heftar and remain very influential. But on a larger scale, Déby’s fall highlights the enduring consequences of Libya’s political weakness. Events in Chad provide one more reason this is not likely to happen any time soon.
