MANILA, Philippines — The improvised cannon boga has toppled piccolo as the leading cause of fireworks-related injuries this New Year, a report of the Department of Health (DOH) showed Monday. Based on data collated by the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau, boga accounted for 14 of 55 injuries recorded in 60 sentinel hospitals nationwide from Dec. 21 to Monday morning. Piccolo was the primary cause of injuries during the same surveillance period in 2017, accounting for 55 of 86 cases. According to DOH, nine of the 55 cases were injured from the morning of Dec. 30 to yesterday morning. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported the arrest of nine more persons for sale, possession and use of prohibited firecrackers.
