The trial I signed up for is being run by the University of Oxford in centres across the country. It contains an inactive version of the common cold alongside a part of the Covid-19 virus – because it is just a part of the virus it can’t actually give someone the illness itself. As I logged in to the Oxford trial website, I actually felt a sense of relief – finally, I could join the fightback, rather than simply continuing to fight fires. As Covid-19 retreats in many countries, researchers are now faced with a new problem: a lack of suitable candidates for trials.
