Earlier this week more than 2,700 people were being treated in hospital for the virus, with 417 on ventilation on Thursday. Last Saturday the government confirmed there were 387 Covid admissions, while a week before that there were 266. The figures were published just nine days before 'Freedom Day', when remaining Covid restrictions will be lifted in spite of an alarming rise in infections. For the fourth day in a row there were more than 30,000 cases, with 32,367 confirmed infections announced this afternoon. At the start of Boris Johnson's roadmap out of lockdown in March, infections had fallen to less than 5,000 a day.
