Data protection laws offer a rare glimmer of certainty


From the Brexit referendum a year ago to the political controversies surrounding the recent general election, uncertainty about the future of Britain has become the new normal. The same is true of the future of UK data protection — or at least it was until the Queen’s Speech. According to the bold statement made to parliament and the country on June 21, a new law will ensure that the UK retains its world-class regime protecting personal data. During this parliament the UK will pass a new Data Protection Act, replacing the existing one. If anything, this means that the government is keen to show it understands the importance of having a robust data protection framework for the prosperity of the country.
