As the Davos delegates move out, the shopfitters move in. The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum may finish at lunchtime but it will be some time before the Swiss ski resort returns to normal. Banished from the actual congress centre by the WEF, which disapproves of the commercialisation of its annual meeting, every available space in the town has been commandeered by accountants, banks, management consultants, IT companies and entire countries to woo investors or entertain clients (or prospective clients). It is not just the shops on the promenade leading to the congress centre that have been rebranded as a “house”, “chalet” or “cafe” — the town’s church, museum and even the veterinary surgery have all been converted into what resemble upmarket first-class airline…
