Representatives sign the agreement at a city hotel on Thursday, January 24, 2019 BSSIt will cost the government Tk12,000 crore to upgrade the national highwayThe government has signed an agreement with a Chinese firm to upgrade 190 kilometres of road from Elenga to Rangpur to a four-lane highway via Hatikumrul, under the South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Road Connectivity Project-II, to ease road communication between the capital and the northern districts. The agreement was signed at a city hotel on Thursday, reports BSS. According to the deal, the construction firm will build seven bridges, 17 culverts, one flyover, five underpasses and 12 bus bays. Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary M Nazrul Islam, ADB Country Director Manmohan Parkash, Project Director Kazi Shahriar Hossain and officials concerned were present at the program, among others. Earlier, the government adopted a multipurpose plan to upgrade 1,752 km of highways to four lanes, along with constructing road dividers and two-lane service roads on both sides of the highways for low speed vehicles to avoid accidents.
