MEXICO CITY—Luz María López, 66, died on April 28 after getting sick with what appeared to have been the new coronavirus. Her death certificate said “probable SARS-CoV-2,” as the virus that causes Covid-19 is known. But Ms. López wasn’t entered into the Mexican government’s official count of deaths caused by the pandemic, which is gathering momentum across the country. The reason: Many patients aren’t being tested for the virus, even if they die.
