June 24, 2021 by Mihi Perera No Comments70 death row inmates at Mahara Prison have gone on a hunger strike due to the Presidential pardon of the 93 inmates released today. Prisons Media Spokesman Prisons Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake stated that the inmates have been on a hunger strike since this afternoon (24). Prisoners are on a hunger strike demanding that the death penalty be commuted to life imprisonment. The inmates of the Mahara Prison have commenced their hunger strike today after the release of 93 inmates, including 16 former LTTE cadres, who were imprisoned under the Terrorism Act.
