Deepa Malik becomes 1st Indian woman Paralympic medallist, wins silver at Rio


India’s Deepa Malik, a wheelchair-bound athlete, etched her name in the record books by winning silver in the shotput F-53 category at the Rio Paralympics on Monday. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sporting icons Abhinav Bindra and Vijender Singh, India congratulated Malik for creating history. @DeepaAthlete as she becomes #India's first ever female #Paralympics medallist, wins silver in Women's F-53 Shot Put final. She holds the Asian record in javelin throw, and also has World Championships silver medals in shot put and discus in 2011. Deepa’s silver is India’s third medal of the Games after Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati won gold and bronze respectively in men’s high jump.
