Democracy under the umbrellaNEW DELHI -- The Hong Kong election has conveyed a pregnant message to China. Altogether, the outcome has been a robust affirmation of the spirited 2014 Umbrella Revolution against Beijing's overbearing policies toward tiny Hong Kong. This must rank as the subtext of the vote, indeed the first since the Umbrella Revolution. Its Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office said it was "resolutely opposed" to any kind of Hong Kong independence activities in the territory's legislature. "Hong Kong's independence is contrary to China's Constitution, harms national sovereignty and security, and will harm Hong Kong's prosperity and stability," is the official response.
