Tauranga Mayor Tenby Powell has called a leadership challenge over his deputy mayor to be preventing progress. An attempted coup in Tauranga has seen the deputy mayor resign but Mayor Tenby Powell has labelled the councillors responsible as "desperate to prevent progress". Mayor Powell said the knives are out and "pointed defensively to hold onto the past and stop progress". Baldock said he resigned as a direct result of the requisition letter calling for his removal. “However the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and now Tina Salisbury are acting in a way to thwart that,” he said.
