It would have provided a memorable double, but victory at Epsom was something to be savoured not only for the Aga but also for Dermot Weld, the trainer, and Pat Smullen, the jockey, who both tasted maiden success in the classic. After watching Harzand take the Investec Derby to record his fifth success in the race by a length and a half over US Army Ranger, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims then saw Zarak beaten into second by a similar distance in the French Derby at Chantilly yesterday.
