The Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit is not only praying the Hail Mary, but it's also throwing one in hopes of getting more families in church on Sundays. The Detroit Archdiocese didn't invent the concept of a religious organization bringing back its own form of blue laws. Weddings blessed by the Catholic Church, down 54%. I'm not sure that non-Catholics or non-churchgoers whose kids played Catholic sports were attending Mass either way, but at the least the Catholic church had a fairly accessible, benign entry point for its message. If parents decide to choose other leagues based on this decision, then the Detroit Archdiocese has lost a chance to spread its message.
