LONG BEACH, Calif.—Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in his first speech on the campaign trail that his experience growing up in poverty and working in nonprofits, government and business make him uniquely suited for president. Mr. Patrick told attendees at the California Democratic Party state convention that he made a late-stage bid for president after deciding to forgo a run last year because his campaign still sees a path forward.
