The state with 25 instances of police firing was at number three across the country while there were only 2 instances in which lathi charge was reported. Also, in both the instances of lathi charge, it was only the policemen to have received injuries. However, Rajasthan police were not the only one to do so, state police of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Odisha also reported more instances of police firing than lathi charge. Against 4,702 policemen reported to be injured during Lathi Charge across 29 states, there were 735 civilians injured, however, it claimed 34 civilian lives and only one police men had died in these. Sources at police department explain the contradiction on the fact that not all instances where police use ‘mild force’ to disburse crowd or containing violent mob get registered as ‘Lathi Charge’.
