Vanhooren, the 19-year bench boss of the Dinos, was honoured along with his star pupil, fifth-year senior Mambi Diawara, as U Sports handed out its national awards at the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Halifax. Diawara, the 2019 Canada West player of the year, was named a first-team all-Canadian. It’s the first national coaching honour in the nearly 60-year history of University of Calgary men’s basketball, and appropriately it came on Vanhooren’s birthday. “Following up on a U Sports national championship with an undefeated season is no easy feat,” said Dinos athletic director Jason Kerswill. “Dan continues to lead a program that has become the hallmark of consistency over the past decade in Canada West.
